The MeLE Quieter 4C N150: A Near-Perfect Solution for Astrophotography

Mele Quieter

Introducing the new MeLE Quieter 4C N150, an almost perfect solution for astrophotography enthusiasts. While it has many strengths, there’s one caveat which I’ll discuss at the end.

Why I Love MeLE Mini PCs

I’ve been a huge fan of these fanless MeLE mini PCs. No pun intended! While many people use ASIAIR for astrophotography, I prefer using a PC for the freedom and flexibility it offers. These compact PCs are the best solution for those of us who prefer Windows.

Design and Build Quality

The MeLE Quieter 4C is built like a tank and boasts an aesthetically pleasing, sleek, and minimalist design. Its compact size, comparable to a thick smartphone, ensures it can fit almost anywhere on your telescope. The grooved top surface aids in heat dissipation.

Constructed with a combination of plastic and metal, the plastic top likely enhances Wi-Fi reception, while the metal base provides durability and sturdiness. The overall build quality feels solid, making it a long-lasting investment.

Silent Operation

One of the standout features of this device is its fanless technology. It operates in complete silence, which is crucial for astrophotography. Fans can cause vibrations, which interfere with your mount and autoguider. With no fan, you get a vibration-free experience.

Features and Specifications

  • Processor: Intel Twin Lake N150, up to 3.6 GHz
  • RAM: 8GB or 16GB, using the latest RAM technology, three times faster than DDR3
  • Storage: 128GB or 256GB, expandable up to 4TB, plus a Micro SD card slot for an additional 2TB
  • Connectivity: Latest Wi-Fi 5, three USB ports (two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0), a fully functional USB-C port
  • Display Support: Up to three 4K displays (limited use in astrophotography)

Performance

The Intel N150 Processor combined with 16GB of RAM ensures smooth performance for everyday astrophotography tasks. I’ve tested it thoroughly with all essential apps, and it hasn’t skipped a beat. However, it’s not designed for resource-heavy tasks like video editing or gaming, which could cause overheating.

Software and User Interface

Running on Windows 11, the user interface is straightforward and user-friendly, making setup and configuration easy. I use Remote Chrome Desktop to operate this PC through my phone, and it works flawlessly.

Power Requirements

The device requires 12V and 2 amps, making it easy to use with a power bank. It also comes with a power supply for use near power points.

Price Point

At $239 USD, the MeLE Quieter 4C is competitively priced, offering excellent value for its features and performance. It’s one of the few computers that combines silent operation with compact versatility.

The Caveat

Despite its many strengths, the MeLE Quieter 4C has a couple of drawbacks. It lacks enough USB ports for astrophotographers who need more connectivity options. Additionally, it can overheat during heavy usage, though this shouldn’t be an issue for typical astrophotography tasks.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Silent, fanless design
  • Compact and portable
  • Good performance

Cons:

  • Limited USB ports
  • Overheating issues during heavy use

Conclusion

Overall, the MeLE Quieter 4C N150 is an excellent choice for astrophotographers. Despite a few minor drawbacks, its performance, design, and silent operation make it a highly recommended device.
